John Ratcliffe Responds to Debt Ceiling Increase
Last night, the House of Representatives passed yet another increase to our nation’s debt ceiling – this time authorizing unlimited borrowing until March 2015. This comes on the heels of a recent CBO report which projects the cumulative deficit over the next decade to be even $1 trillion greater than previously expected.
When will Washington finally get serious about stopping the out-of-control spending? Every child born into this world now enters with $55,000 of debt to his or her name, yet politicians continue to kick the can down the road as they refuse to make tough decisions. The irresponsibility can end one of two ways – either through a European-style debt crisis that ends America’s status as an economic superpower, or through leadership.
I’m running for Congress because I think leadership is the answer. The failed establishment in Washington doesn’t deserve an increased limit on its credit card, especially when our children will be the ones footing the bill.
Balancing the budget shouldn’t be rocket science. Like you, I balance my family’s budget each and every year, and do it without raising taxes. As the Mayor of Heath, Texas, I’m proud to have balanced eight straight budgets during tough economic times. This doesn’t have to be the exception. In fact, three quarters of states already have balanced budget amendments. It’s time Washington learned this much needed lesson in fiscal responsibility.
